What can ZDP do for me?
With ZDP (ZEBU's Directory Printer) you can export the entries in a directory. There are several
selection options to do this (e.g. recursive listing, file filter, ...). The output can be formatted with different
pre-defined formats. Additional output formats can be defined on the fly. Additional output options
are enumeration of files and stifle of empty directories.
The output is available in other programs (e.g. MS Word) via copy - paste or the clipboard, or can be exported into an HTML file and a separated text file.
The software can dynamically switch between English and German. Other languages can be added without any problem if needed.
Further information (latest version, release history, future features, screenshots, contact information, ...) is available here. The software is updated regularly and the needs of the users can be added.
How do I use ZDP?
The work with ZDP is defined in 5 steps:
How do I switch the language?
ZDP is available in english and german. Click on the corresponding flag in the upper right
corner of the application to switch the language. The switch takes place immediately, in all
ZDP dialogs, and without a restart.
On principle, other languages can be added. But: There had to be someone who is translating all the texts.
How do I define new output formats?
One click on the button 'Define new format...' opens a dialog, that lists all available
properties of files and directories. To add a property to the new output format one has to
check the checkbox in front of the property (for a directory, a file, or for both). After this,
the corresponding button will be enabled and a click on this button will add the field to the
output format. At the bottom of the dialog there is a preview of the new format for files as well as
directories. The checkbox will be disabled, because every property can appear only once in the
There is one special case: Texts can be added almost everywhere. Because ZDP has a strict separation of the output fields, a text always belongs to one field. It can be in front or after that field. This feature allows for example to put properties in parentheses, or to write 'bytes' after the size of a file.
Finally, a click on the button 'OK' will add the new output format to the list and the format is available from now on.
How do I store the computed directory list?
Where are the self-defined output formats stored?
The formats are stored in a file in the application directory. The file is called 'formats.def'. ZDP checks, if that file is available (at the start of the application). If the file is not there or any row in the file cannot be interpreted properly, a new file is written. That standard file defines three standard output formats.
How do I delete a self-defined output format?
At the moment that is no possible with ZDP. The formats are all stored in a file called 'formats.def' in the application directory. That file can be edited manually with every text editor. To delete a format one just has to delete the corresponding row. Take care: It is not a good idea to add a new output format manually: If ZDP cannot interpret one row in the file, the whole file will be replaced by a standard file.
Where do I find information about new versions of ZDP?
A piece of software is never completed. Therefore, there will be new versions of ZDP, too. On one hand there will be new features, on the other bugfixes. As soon as a new version of ZDP is available, this is communicated with the mailinglist. Register to that mailinglist on the ZDP site.
Who can answer other questions I have?
The easiest way is to send an email to the developer of ZDP.
